UPDATED ANCILLARY TASK: practice

Due to changing our actress from Charlotte to Grace, this meant I had to also change my Digpak and poster ideas. This was not too much of a problem, as I had not completely finished either. I need to now take new pictures of Grace, and use these instead of the other ones.

As we cannot easily take pictures of Grace, due to her currently living in Falmouth, I knew she has occasional shoots done for her. Therefore, I asked permission to use these pictures to practise on. These will not be my final Digipak, this is just practise/draft ones.

I used a previous student's digipak poster for inspiration:

I really like how she has dissoloved two pictures into one. It is really effective, as it almost shows what the girl is thinking. It also shows the genre of the song they made a video to, without actually listening or knowing the song.

I wanted to use a similar font on my digipak album as Lorde's album. Her album 'Green Light' does not have any writing on the front, therefore I researched another album of hers. I found 'Pure Heroin', which has writing on the front. Then I researched the font used on the front. I found it on http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/futura/, however, it costs £21 to use, therefore I thought I should look at more websites to find a similar one.

TASK TWENTY FOUR: Photoshoot Planning

For the album cover for my music video, I plan to show parts of both the performance and narative. I will do this by having a different picture on each panel.

Firstly, for my front cover I want it to show the main part of my music video, which would be the performance part. Because this will be taken in a photography studio, she will be sat in the same location. I also want her to look directly at the camera, so it shows the emotion in which she portrays through the video. I want the cover to show just her shoulders up, therefore it will be a medium close-up shot, to show she is the most important person.

For other panels, I want pictures of Grace (our actress) in the location we will film our performance part in. As we are planning to film in Bristol, we will take pictures as we are filming because then, Grace will look the same, and will be wearing the same. Not only this but the weather will also be the same. I want to show a clear link between my ancillary task and my music video, as then when looking the ancillary, it will give the audience a big clue as to what sort of music video it is. This is where we plan to take pictures:

For my CD cover I would like to just show the location we are filming in. I am planning not to have Grace (our actress) in this part of my album cover. This is because I would like to show the audience again where the location is that I film either my narative or performance in. I would also like to make it a bit different from the other panels. I am planning to edit my CD into a 'black and white' effect. This will help it stand out, but could also imply the dark emotion which our actress feels in the start of our video.

Filming Schedule 2

From the timetables I collected of my partner's, my actor's and the studio, I made a timetable of the school day matching up our free time together.

This allows me to clearly see potential filming times.

I also discussed timings with the teacher who works in the photography studio, we have agreed to film on thursday after school.

Filming Schedule Planning

We collected together all three of our lesson timetables, so we could look at them all and decide when we could practice and start our music video.

We also took a picture of the photography studios' timetable, of when it is free. We can use this to check when we can use it to film the performance side of our music video.

Location Permission

I emailed the teacher who works in the photography studio requesting permission to film our music video there.

Location Scouting

Our video will be filmed entirely in a studio. We want this as it will give our video a more stylish finish and look more professional. Also this is a good option for us as the studio is very accessible and our actress knows the equipment well as she is a photography student. The lighting is key in our video and the studio allows us to use good lighting equipment, hopefully this will be clear in our finished product. The lighting we have within the studio will also enable us to use the neon paints we wanted to, as we want them to glow in the dark. Without a specific light (which the studio has) we would not be able to use them.

Narrative Planning

Learning Comment:
By doing the narrative planning, me and Annabel realised we do not have one set decision yet. Therefore, by analysing 3 of them, we can look at this and think which the best idea might be. I think out of all of our ideas, number 3 is the best. This is because I think the neon paint would be very effective, as it would allow us to show any sort of emotion we want. For example, we could use red, to show anger or blue to show sadness. I believe this would work well, the paints would allow us to tell a story without saying any words at all. This would mean our music video would be shot fully in a photography studio. I also think this is a good idea, as we can then control the lighting we want/need. However, it could be a problem as we will not have a variety of locations within our video.

TASK TWENTY-THREE: Creating a Brand

Powered by emaze

LEARNING COMMENT:
From doing this task, I was able to research different artists' logo, and use theirs for inspiration for mine. Most I researched, are just the singer's name, therefore I wanted to make mine similar as it would then look more professional. Artists and DJs such as Eminem, David Guetta, Selena Gomez and Bastille have all done this, and are all very famous and well-known. I researched many websites where I could download and use a specific font for free, however, last year for media I had used "dafont.com", and therefore knew it was easy and quick to use, which was very usueful. For many of the logos I designed, I put lines to outline our actor's name. This is because many artists have used this and I thought it looked effective, as it shows the name is important to know about. Although my chosen design is not too interesting, I have copied the codes and conventions of other artists, which I think is important.

We decided on idea 3 for our music video. We took inspiration from this previous students music video:

TASK TWENTY-TWO: Ancillary Tasks Planning

Planning for my Digipak:

Learning Comment:
From doing this task, I was able to design my own digipak and poster. This is an important thing to do as it is what professional artists do, therefore would make my whole design with my music video look more and more well-made. I also learnt what specific artists use for their CD designs, and how they almost always match their genre of music. For example, Lorde's genre of music seems quite dark, which is reflected in her CD and posters which are quite dark too. Not only did I learn about digipaks themselves, but I also learnt much more about using Photoshop, which I had not known a lot about before. Because I know now how to use Photoshop, I can use this for the future in media, maybe when I am editing another digipak or poster.

TASK TWENTY: Location and Actor Planning

Task 20 from annabelbutler134

(Our message to our actress, asking her to be in our music video. )

LEARNING COMMENT:
From doing this task, we were able to prepare and think about who our main actress will be. We decided we will use our friend Charlotte Cheal who we have used for previous tasks in other school subjects. We will film mostly in the photography studio, as we think it would look more professional as we can easily control the lighting. This task enabled us to think more into planning, and now that we know who our actress is, and where we will film our music video.

ACTOR PLANNING AFTER CHANGE OF ACTRESS:

Location and actor planning from annabelbutler134

TEST SHOOT :

After having trouble with our first actress we thought that before going ahead in planning to use Grace, we would do a test run of the song to see how professional she was and if she was comfortable in front of the camera… sort of like an audition!

TASK NINETEEN: Fashion and Props Planning

Powered by emaze
Learning Comment
By doing this task, I was able to plan about what fashion and props I may need for the music video I will be creating. I believe our next step will be buying the stuff we have planned to use, so we are able to see if they work well or if they do not and if they are safe to use.

TASK EIGHTEEN: Initial Pitch Ideas

LEARNING COMMENT:
From doing this task, it enabled me to bring all of my ideas together and think about my whole music video. We were able to think about the actress we are using, the location, fashion, props and more. Because of this, we are now more sure on the sort of music video we want to do.
From now, now that we have all of our general ideas sorted out, we can start planning our storyboard etc, to work out exactly how we are going to film our narrative/performance parts of our music video.

HOWEVER we have now changed our ideas since making this powerpoint, pitch and learning comment. We have decided to film all of our music video in the photography studio. This is because we want to make it look more professional, and when we tested lighting in the location we wanted, it did not look good whilst filming.  Also, we have seen many professional music videos filmed in a photography studio, which look very effective too.

We got part of our inspiration from a former Castle School student from 2015. Grace filmed all of her music video in a photography studio, and it still looked extremely well-made and professional. Me and Annabel think this looks very good, and we can also control whatever lighting we need much more easily. Therefore, we plan to do something similar to this.

TASK SEVENTEEN: Our Video - Lyric Analysis

LEARNING COMMENT:

From doing this task, it allowed us to really look into the song and lyrics we are remaking. This helped, as we realised what Lorde means in the lyrics she sings and because of this, we can take her meanings and include it in our music video too.  We learnt that Lorde's lyrics to her song 'Green Light' is mostly about a previous partner and how he cheated on her. From the beginning, we knew that we did not want to base our music video around a heartbreak. This is because this is very cliché and has been done many times in Indie music videos. Therefore, from doing this task we realised we do not want to do the exact same as what Lorde does in her music video, as it is not the same as what we planned.
